           Choosing a therapist is one of the most personal decisions you can make. Here's a framework to help you find someone who's actually the right fit.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           You've been carrying something for a while now. Maybe you've tried to name it, or maybe it just sits there — a low hum of something not quite right. You've finally decided to look for a therapist. And now, somehow, that feels like its own overwhelming task.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           I want to make that process a little easier. Whether you're looking for a therapist for the first time or starting over after one that didn't work out, these are the questions worth sitting with.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "The therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes in therapy. Finding the right fit it's the work."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What's their approach, and does it match what you're looking for?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Translation: how do they actually think about change?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Therapists come from many different theoretical traditions: cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, somatic, humanistic, and more. These aren't just jargon, they shape what happens in the room. A CBT therapist might help you identify and reframe unhelpful thought patterns. A psychodynamic therapist will be more curious about what's underneath the patterns, and why they keep repeating.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Neither approach is universally better. But one might be better for you, right now. If you've tried skills-based approaches and still feel like something is missing, depth-oriented work might be worth exploring. If you want concrete tools and a structured path forward, a more directive approach might suit you better.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Don't be afraid to ask a prospective therapist directly:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What's your approach? What does a typical session with you look like?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Do they have experience with what you're going through?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Translation: have they been here before with other clients?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Specialization matters. A therapist who works primarily with life transitions, immigration, grief, or trauma has built up a depth of understanding that generalist training doesn't always provide. They'll recognize patterns faster, ask better questions, and be less likely to miss something important.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is especially true for bicultural clients and first-generation adults. Navigating between two cultures (two sets of expectations, two languages, two versions of yourself) is a specific kind of complexity. A therapist who understands that from the inside, or has worked extensively with this population, will be able to meet you in a way that a well-meaning but culturally inexperienced clinician simply can't.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Can you actually talk to them — in the language that's most yours?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Translation: will you have to translate yourself to be understood?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           For bilingual and multilingual clients, language in therapy isn't just a logistical question. It's a clinical one. Emotions don't always translate cleanly across languages. Some things are easier to access in Spanish; some are easier to approach in English. A therapist who can move with you between both offers something genuinely different.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If language is central to your experience, it should be central to your search.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What does the first session feel like?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Translation: trust your nervous system.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A first session should feel like a conversation, not an intake form. A good therapist will ask questions (about what's bringing you in, what you've tried before, what you're hoping for) but they'll be listening for the shape of your experience, not just collecting data points.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You don't need to have everything figured out before you go in. Many people come in knowing something isn't working but not knowing what to call it yet. That's a fine place to start.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           By the end, you should have some sense of whether this person gets it and whether you could imagine going deeper with them. That feeling matters; it's the foundation of the work.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Are you allowed to evaluate them?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Translation: yes, and a good therapist will expect it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is perhaps the most important thing I want you to take from this post: therapy is a relationship you are entering by choice, and you are allowed to decide it isn't right for you.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A therapist won't take this personally. They want you to find the right fit, even if that fit isn't them. If you leave a first session feeling like something was off, trust that. You can name it. You can ask questions. You can try someone else.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The goal is a space that's honest, safe enough to take risks in, and genuinely yours.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;

           They studied hard. They worked long hours.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           They learned how to adapt, translate, and carry responsibility far earlier than most.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           From the outside, they look successful.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           From the inside, many feel tired, conflicted, and quietly alone.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           They often say some version of:
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;blockquote&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “I should feel grateful.”﻿﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           “I worked so hard to get here, and I don’t know why I still feel anxious.”﻿﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/blockquote&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When you grow up in a family shaped by immigration, sacrifice, or survival, success is never just individual.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your achievements carry meaning for your parents, your siblings, and often an entire community. You may feel pride
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            and also guilt
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            . Relief
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           and also grief.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            You may notice yourself downplaying your success to protect others’ feelings, sending money even when it creates stress, feeling pressure to stay connected to a version of yourself you’ve outgrown, or struggling to set boundaries without feeling selfish.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Push and Pull of Two Worlds
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Many first-gen and bicultural adults live with a constant internal tension:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           One part of you longs for rest, freedom, and choice.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Another part carries loyalty, responsibility, and fear of being “too much” or “too different.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You may feel like:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            You don’t fully belong where you came from
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            You don’t fully belong where you are now
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This in-between space can feel isolating. It can show up as anxiety, relationship conflict, money stress, or a sense that something is always “off,” even when life looks good on paper.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When the Nervous System Never Got the Memo
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your body may still be living in a survival state (scanning, preparing, holding). Even when things are stable, your nervous system may not feel it yet.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is why rest can feel uncomfortable.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why spending money can trigger guilt or panic.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why slowing down feels unsafe.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           These responses are not flaws. They are learned adaptations.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Therapy as a Place to
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Starting therapy is a meaningful step, and it's completely normal to feel a little nervous going into that first session. Whether you've never worked with a therapist before or you're returning after some time away, knowing what to expect can help you walk in with a little more ease.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Here's what typically happens, and why it matters more than you might think.

           The first consultation isn't about diving into the deepest parts of your story right away. It's about getting to know each other. Every therapist works differently, and the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in whether therapy actually helps.

I'll be curious about what's brought you here now: not just the presenting problem, but the patterns underneath it. How do you typically handle difficult emotions?            I work from a psychodynamic and experiential foundation. That means I'm interested in how your past (your family history, your cultural background, the relationships that shaped you) shows up in your present. I also draw from trauma-informed practice, psychodrama, and art-based methods, because I believe the most lasting change happens when therapy goes beyond talking and into felt, embodied experience.
          &#xD;

           Inmigrar nos obliga a

           . Ya no somos exactamente quienes éramos en nuestro país de origen, sino que nos enfrentamos al reto de adaptarnos a nuevas costumbres, idiomas y formas de vida. En este proceso, es común sentirnos desarraigados, desconectados de lo que antes era familiar y seguro. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           El proceso de duelo es una parte esencial de esta experiencia: duelamos no solo la pérdida física de nuestro hogar y seres queridos, sino también una parte de nosotros mismos que quedó en ese lugar. Esta pérdida puede incluir la nostalgia por nuestras relaciones, nuestra cultura y la rutina que nos daba sentido.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

            Si bien adaptarnos a un nuevo país es desafiante, regresar al lugar de origen después de haber vivido en el extranjero también puede ser desconcertante. Esto es lo que llamamos
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           choque cultural inverso.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Volver a nuestras raíces puede generar sentimientos de desconexión, ya que lo que solía ser familiar ahora puede sentirse ajeno. Muchas personas experimentan una sensación de no pertenecer completamente ni al nuevo país ni al anterior.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Sentimiento de pertenencia: ¿Quién eras, quién eres y quién quieres ser?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           La inmigración abre una puerta a preguntas profundas sobre nuestra identidad. ¿Quién soy ahora en este nuevo contexto? ¿Cómo integro mi pasado con mi presente? ¿Dónde encajo en este mundo nuevo y en el que dejé atrás?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Este proceso puede ser confuso, pero también es una oportunidad para redescubrirnos. Encontrar un equilibrio entre quiénes éramos antes de emigrar, quiénes somos en nuestra nueva realidad, y quiénes queremos ser es clave para nuestro bienestar emocional.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           La importancia de pertenecer: Identidad y propósito
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Como seres humanos, tenemos una necesidad fundamental de pertenecer, de sentirnos parte de algo más grande que nosotros mismos. Durante la experiencia migratoria, este sentido de pertenencia puede verse interrumpido, dejándonos un vacío emocional. Sin embargo, reconectar con nuestra identidad y propósito en este nuevo lugar puede ayudarnos a reconstruir esa sensación de pertenencia, integrando nuestras raíces con nuestra nueva vida.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
